Injured Hit Buffalo City Lose 1-0 Against Erie Admirals
Buffalo NY - The inaugural 2009 NPSL third home game for Buffalo City FC kicked off on the 13th of June against Erie Admirals. Buffalo City FC were back from a long road trip where they picked up two wins out of two games. The club faced a strong Erie Admirals side who were currently positioned in second place 5 points behind Buffalo.
Buffalo were forced to make seven changes in their squad from last two away games due to injury. A win would take Buffalo 8 points clear at the top of the table. A loss would see Erie Admirals close the gap at the top of the conference to 2 points.
Buffalo City FC's Head Coach Mike Share anticipated a tough game against Erie Admirals "I expect a tough game. Erie has a strong English side and you always know what you get from these boys. I expect Erie to have a great work rate and to be strong on every 50/50 balls. I am looking forward to the game and hopefully we can get the result that we are looking for".
Share called up several other players for the first time in the squad including the new goalkeeper signing of Nick Fetterman.
Buffalo lined up with several changes to their starting eleven. New signing Jake Schindler paired up with Herbert Deleon as a central defender. Fellow new signing Roshard Gilbert was a late call up to the squad due to Marc Stencel pulling out of the squad with a groin injury. Buffalo tried to start the game in an attacking fashion, but could not break Erie down. The best chance in the first 20 minutes fell to Erie when Jeremey Deighton's deflected shot hit the post.
The home side started to pick up the tempo but wasted several chances infront of goal with Erie's goalkeeper.
In the 37 minute Buffalo had a clean shout for a penalty but the referee did not award Buffalo but was a clear cut penatly when Erie's defender clipped the heels from Buffalo's forward Justin Fredsell in the box.
Buffalo had several more chances in the first half but they could not make the possession count. The second half kicked off in the same fashion, with Buffalo looking to push strongly forward.
Things took a big turn when in the 62th minute Erie Admirals fouled Justin Fredsell in their penalty box. The referee gave Erie a yellow card and awarded Buffalo with a penalty kick, but 20 second later decided to give the ball to Erie.
Buffalo shortly after lost concentration and conceded a free kick on the edge of the ball, still fuming from the bad decision, Buffalo did not pick up the marker from Erie who passed the ball across the goal line for Erie to convert for a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo City FC's Head Coach took desperate measures and brough several attacking players on including himself, the game started to pick up with Buffalo looking to tie the game. Several chances were missed again including a Share heading the ball just wide. Buffalo tried to put more pressure on but in the end the referee killed the game with many bad calls.
Soon after Buffalo missed a great chance when Peter Marlette was one on one with the goalkeeper but could only find place his shot straight at the goalkeeper for an easy save.
Mike Share was cautioned in the 88th minute and at the final whistle Share confronted the referee to be shown another yellow and to be sent off.
Buffalo still stay top of the table two point clear of Erie. Buffalo's lose takes their record to: 5-1-0
Buffalo City FC's Head Coach Mike Share said "I'm dissapointed with the result but more than anything with the referee. I am still shocked that a referee can give a player a yellow card for a foul in the penalty box but not award a penalty kick. On a personal note I should know better then to confront the referee and feel disappointed with myself. Even if the referee ruined the game I should know better and lead by example for my players. Anyone that knows me will say that I love the game and try to play it with everything I have, I saw red and was very unhappy with the referee this does not excuse my actions".
Share went on to say "I thought we looked very narrow we missed our wide players and I am happy to say that next week we should have a near to full squad, it's been lucky that we picked so many points up in the first 5 games that we could have afforded to lose this game and still be top. I have every faith in my players that next week they will show what a good team and players we are, personally I wish the away game against Erie would be tomorrow as it is going to be a long week".
