Buffalo City FC returned from two away wins (Charm City, and PA Stoners) this past Sunday. Stephen Brandt and Mike Share sat down again for their annual Manager's Chat, this time it's in preparation for a back to back with Erie. Buffalo City FC returns home at Nichols School on Saturday to play Erie at 6pm, addmission is free and weather should be good. If you want to get involved with the next manager's chat contact Stephen at sbrandt@buffalocityfc.com
Can you update us on the condition of Rich Wilson? There was a nasty rumor floating around that he had broken his leg against Charm City?
Rich Wilson is going to be out for several weeks, he was very lucky not to break his leg. Wilson needed 16 stitches across his shin and we are hopeful he makes a speedy recovery and return to the team.
Soccer teams are built from the back, as the manager, how good does it feel that we have a back line who are so good?
I am very happy with our back line. We are very comfortable passing the ball around and good in the air. Also both full backs are good pushing up and giving support to our midfield.
We see this a lot in pro sports here in America, a team playing the same team back to back, as the manager, is it easier to train your players if you have a back to back against the same team?
Not really it does not make a difference. I pick players on how well they train. Also each game is different even if it is against the same team. You change players and formations on whatever the situation is in the game.
Scoring has come easier for Buffalo City FC than most teams who've only practiced for a month before they kicked off the season, how much of this is the talent you brought in, and how much is this the system you are using?
As a coach I choose a system that works for the players and the team we are playing. The players work hard every day in training on finishing and moving the ball around to get opportunities in front of the goal. So it's both. You can have the best system in place but if you do not have the players to play it then it will not work. I feel that everyone in our team can finish and that's why we are getting so many goals.
FAN QUESTION. Mike W. The club is undefeated, is Mike Share happier now with the play of his midfield over the past 3 games?
I am happy all in all with the team. I think the players still need to learn how to read the game better. I try and remind the players before the game about small details regarding the field size, wet surface so that the ball will zip around quicker. Other things like what kind of balls they should be playing in the ball. What defensive formation they should play when the other team changes their attacking formation, but often the
players seem to use the information not correctly. We are working hard on this and I am sure the players will start reading the game better.
Bobby Shuttlesworth has been stellar for us, what has he meant to you as the manager when you do the lineup card?
Bobby gives everyone confidence, this is very important for a team. You can not have a goalkeeper that makes mistakes, this will produce negative feelings through out the defence and team. Players will start to play a different game that they should because they do not feel any confidence in the goalkeeper. It makes a big difference having a goalkeeper like Bobby. I am sure Bobby has a good future and career a head of him in this sport. As a coach I want players in every position that set the playing level of
standards that we should be playing at.
Could a fan contact you if they wanted a game tape of any of our home games? And how much are copies?
Fans can request to buy our game day tapes. Each DVD costs 12 dollars and has a featured player. For more information please contact info@buffalocityfc.com
In Europe, the season's are over, now we have the very fun (At least for the fans) Transfer season coming up, as a former player who has moved clubs, how hard is this part of the year? (ie rumors etc)
I think as a player it is also an interesting time. Times are changing now where before players could sign for teams all year round. Now you only have two transfer windows where under contract players can sign only in January and throughout the summer. This makes it even more interesting especially as you see many big signings in the summer that can really shape a team in a different way.
Were you surprised that Kaka went to Real Madrid? Are they just grabbing players for the headlines, or will this work (given the annual manager turnover they have)
I think Kaka is a good player especially for Real Madrid, he is perfectly suited for the Spanish style and game tempo. I am happy he did not go to Chelsea as I think he would not do well in the EPL. I think Chelsea would have had the same situation as Man United when they signed Veron, he was a great player and especially in Man United's Champions League Games but in the domestic games he struggled with the tempo and style of play. I think Real Madrid will also buy Ronaldo from Man United I am not sure if this will make Real Madrid a better team, but I am sure it will please the fans for a short time being. You have to remember that in Spain there is a lot of politics especially when it comes to presidents being elected at clubs. They will promise the world and many new star players to try and get elected even if it means that they are not the correct players for the team or if the team needs that kind of players.
I'm going to be greedy here, not many people know this but I'm probably the ONLY Sunderland fan here, what do you think of Steve Bruce going to the Stadium of Light? And a follow up, is the "Big name" that Chairman Niall Quinn has been clamoring for to lead Sunderland to mid table medoricacy?
I think Steve Bruce is a great manager, he is from the North East, so he knows what the clubs means to the fans and what the clubs is about. Sunderland has a great stadium and training facilities and not to mention loyal fans that turn up for each game. I think also with the money being pumped into Sunderland that they are looking to push the club forward and I think Steve Bruce will help the club progress to the next level in the next couple of years.
