Stephen Brandt's Mangers Chat 9 With Buffalo City FC's Mike Share (07/07/09)

Buffalo City heads on the road for a match with Pocono Snow on Friday night, so Stephen Brandt and Mike Share sat down for their managers chat this week. Among some of the topics Mike addresses is shirt swapping, our uniform color, and Michael Owen signing for Manchester United.

You've had significant time off between matches, is that an issue for game preparation for upcoming matches?

Not really, especially when it only has been one weekend of not having a game. Players still train and work hard in between games. So too be honest it should not have any significant effect on our preparation for the two upcoming games we have this week. More than anything the players should be
ready to put two great performances in and with a bit of luck who knows what will happen at the end of the season.

Are we at the end of the era of star players like Raul staying at one club for their career?

No, I don't think we are at the end of an era. Just look at John Terry, Gerrard to name a few. Obviously now a days players want to experience football (soccer) in different leagues especially with all the money involved and new challenges. But even 20 years ago there were only a few players who would end their careers at the same club that they started at. If you think about it, than it makes sense. It is not easy for a player to be able to spend all his career at the same club especially if the club is at the highest level, this is why you only see a few players who play at one club all their career. You have to be an exceptional player to be able to achieve this.

With all the roster turnover does it make team selection hard for you?

Sadly players leaving the club or being released is part of the game. It is never nice to release players but I feel even though our squad is a lot smaller now it has enough quality to win every game. Personally I am more satisfied with our current squad then any other time we have had a squad. Every position is filled with quality instead of going for quantity and just having a big squad.

The club has been in the news a lot, from a selfish point of view has it helped you with your aim of making the club commercially viable in Buffalo?

It is great getting exposure in the media. Especially when it is positive attention. The club is working hard to make people understand that we are here to help other youth teams. We want every youth club in the area to grow while our club gets bigger. This will only help us as it will increase the talent pool of players. Our recent media exposure only helps our cause so that people understand what the club is about.

We have three different jersey's for the club, do you have any preference?

Actually we have four different shirts. I like all of our club strips. I would say the black with gold home shirt was my favourite but our red away
shirt is really growing on me. I also like our white with gold training shirt and I can not forget to mention our blue coaching shirt. The blue is my favourite only because I am one of the only people at the club with one. I stand out and it makes me feel special.

Any word on Bobby Shuttleworth, and how he is doing in the MLS?

I speak normally once a week to Bobby and what hear from Bobby and see on TV is that he is doing very well. He has made the bench for two games now, first in the US Open Cup and last weekend against LA Galaxy. Bobby is a quality goalkeeper who has the potential to play at the highest level especially with his work rate. With a bit of luck I expect Bobby to have a great career.

Any players coming back from injury that we can look forward to seeing this weekend?

Hopefully we will have Rich Wilson and Dan Cavanaugh back from injury. Besides the two players mentioned everyone else is fit and ready for both games.

Do you think the MLS is treating David Beckham well enough to warrant him being here? (ie Landon Donnovan's Comments)

I think that's a great question. I think Donnovan's comments were very unprofessional. What do they really achieve? Nothing. Is Donnavan really so worried that Beckham will come to LA Galaxy not bothered to win games and give it his all. Come on Beckham is a true professional who has given it his all when he was in the US. He has proven this for over 14 years. I think the comments were made because Donnovan went again to Europe trying to get a deal and failing again, while Beckham secured a deal once again with one of the biggest clubs in Europe and the world. In the end Donnovan's comments will only create bad blood in the dressing room.

For us fans, we see a lot of shirt trading after matches over in Europe, how do players set that up (ie get the shirts?)

Shirt swapping is a normal thing in Europe. Normally you swap shirts if you are friends or if you play against a player that you admire, like your boyhood hero. I always like the English FA Cup games when a smaller club plays against Chelsea, Man Utd or Liverpool. At the end of the game all the players run to their favourite players fighting to swap shirts. Sometimes you even see a forward marking another forward at the end of the game just so he can have the shirt of his favourite player even if it puts him out of
position in game.

What do you think about Michael Owen going to Man U?

I think first of all it's a real bargain. Owen is only 29 years old and a lot of people forget what a great player he is. Great players do not become bad players over night. Ferguson knows what he is doing and I am sure if they can keep Owen fit that he will score at least 15 goals if not more. You have to remember without being disrespectful to Newcastle United that Owen was at club that would change their coaches every day of the week. There was no stability. Owen was injured for most of his stint at the club and he was not getting any delivery for goals. He still managed 10 goals this season. I think the move will not just see Owen back at his best but it will also give Owen the change to be part of the England team at the
2010 World Cup.
